A Foster Dog may be coming directly from the shelter, a boarding or home boarding facility, a Temporary or Short-Term Foster Home, or from the Rescue Founder's care.
It is important that you are realistic and honest with how long you can keep a Foster Dog for; we depend on you sticking to your time commitment because a Long-Term Foster Home is where a Foster Dog truly begins to thrive.
You will help them get settled into a new routine, feel comfortable and safe, and help them gain confidence by having new experiences while living in a home environment with you.
If you change your mind or back out sooner then what you committed to, it creates stress and instability for the Foster Dog, puts an added strain on our team, and disrupts the Decompression Process. PLEASE-- TAKE YOUR OFFER TO FOSTER SERIOUSLY. THANK YOU.
Our Long-Term Foster Parents agree to help with training their Foster Dog through utilizing our Co-Parenting Prep Course and working with approved and qualified virtual/in-person certified dog trainers (as needed).
Keep in mind that your Foster Dog needs the following (this is not a complete list):
We will provide a complete list of your specific Foster Dog's preferences for exercise, sleep routine, meals, toys, playtime, behavioral needs, things to avoid, etc. along with a Feeding Schedule and instructions for how to prepare their food and any supplements, medications, hygiene routines, etc. that are needed.
*Please Note: The Foster Dog will have their dog license registered to your address under the Rescue Founder's Name after the first 30 days of the dog being in your residence (if applicable).
Temporary Fostering: Typically 1-3 Weeks
Short-Term Fostering: 4 Weeks / 1 Month to 3 Months
This option allows a Foster Dog to begin to decompress, and is good if you are able to help but cannot commit for an unknown length of time.
Long-Term Fostering: 3+ Months (or as long as it takes for the dog to get adopted)
You commit to caring for a Foster Dog for an unknown length of time--until they are placed into their Foster-to-Adopt home!
Foster-to-Adopt (Adoption): Furever!
All Potential Adopters will go through a required 2-Month Foster Period (3-Month Foster Period for puppies) to ensure a lasting fit with their Foster-to-Adopt Dog. Once the Foster Period is up, then the Adoption Contract will be finalized! Adoption Fees are paid at the time of finalizing the Adoption (or you can request a monthly payment plan if needed).
Please reach us at hello@mikosrescuemission.org if you cannot find an answer to your question, we are happy to provide a response!
YES!! We provide all necessary supplies, food, vet care, etc. for your foster dog! We can create a wishlist with needed supplies to have them directly shipped to your home!
Temporary, Short-Term, and Long-Term Fosters homes must be located somewhere in the state of California, ideally in the Los Angeles area.
Foster-to-Adopt (Adoption) applicants can be located anywhere in the United States. In some cases, transport of the dog to your home can be arranged upon approval, and you are required to pay all transport costs.
In other cases, you will be required to come to California to meet your potential dog in-person to ensure it's a good fit. You will then need to drive your dog back to your home or arrange a private flight. We do NOT allow our dogs to be transported via cargo on airplanes.
We welcome applicants who live in apartments, condos, townhouses, mobile homes, single-family houses, and duplexes. You need to have some sort of enclosed outdoor space (patio, backyard, balcony); for some dogs, they do require a securely-fenced backyard.
We only offer a Foster-to-Adopt option to ensure our dogs are placed into the right home for both them and you! It is essentially a 2-month minimum Foster Period that acts as a trial of the dog living in your home.
If you are applying for Foster-to-Adopt, you are basically applying for Adoption! The Foster Period should (hopefully) just be an added cushion of support while your dog transitions into your home and care. If you have any hesitation or change your mind within the Foster Period, you can return the dog to us and feel confident that we will support your decision without guilt or pressure!
We do place an Adoption Hold on the dog during this time so they are not actively networked and are reserved for you. We always prefer people to select Long-Term Fostering if they are not quite sure if they want to adopt or not. Then, if you feel it's a good fit, you can apply for Foster-to-Adopt at that point!
(Foster to-Adopt) Adoption Fees help to ensure basic costs of your dog are covered, as well as an investment on your part that demonstrates a commitment to keeping your dog furever. Your contribution is 100% tax-deductible.
Payments are due at the time of signing the Adoption Contract. If you need to set up a Payment Plan, please ask! We are happy to accommodate. Please note that the Foster Period is required for all adoptions—no exceptions.
If you financially sponsored or long-term fostered your dog prior to applying for Foster-to-Adoption, your fee may be reduced or waived (not applicable for puppies). Adoption Fees are as follows:
We also welcome you to make a donation on top of your Adoption Fee if you feel called to contribute to the ongoing care of the other dogs in our rescue. We are so grateful for you, thank you!
